Georgian Court University (GCU) has officially launched a new Master of Social Work (MSW) Program. The first class of part-time students will start this fall.

As a professional degree, GCU’s Master of Social Work Program prepares students for advanced practice. They will offer two specializations: Direct Practice, also referred to as Clinical Practice, and Community Partnership.

The Clinical Practice specialization focuses on developing skills and knowledge needed to work effectively with individuals, families, and small groups in therapeutic settings. The Community Partnership specialization prepares students for careers in government agencies and nonprofits in policy, administration, management, and leadership.

The WRS Introductory Course provides an overview of the Wilson Reading System® 4th Edition curriculum and serves as the prerequisite for WRS Level I Certification.

This course presents teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the five principles of literacy instruction that align with the Common Core Learning Standards (Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension).

While attending this course, you will participate in hands-on activities utilizing WRS research-based, multisensory strategies to maximize the learning of students with reading difficulties.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has recognized Georgian Court with the Presidents’ Award for Academic Excellence. With 44 out of 303 Division II schools earning the honor this year, Georgian Court ranks in the top 15% of member schools for academic performance.

The award is given annually to Division II schools with a four-cohort (2012-15) Academic Success Rate (ASR) of 90% or higher. Georgian Court, a member of the NCAA’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, is one of only two Division II schools in New Jersey to receive the honor.

Georgian Court University (GCU) has been a trailblazer of opportunity for women since its founding in 1908 as an all-women’s educational institution. The university became co-ed in 2012, but its legacy of women’s leadership laid the strong foundation that makes GCU what it is today.

“While higher education generally provided what was then called ‘a chilly climate for women,’ at the time of its founding Georgian Court College was quite the opposite,” said Dr. Mary Chinery, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. “Georgian Court had women in every key leadership position – president, deans, department chairs, and more.”

Georgian Court-Hackensack Meridian Health School of Nursing and Wellness recently celebrated the graduation of 29 students who successfully completed the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) during the 19^th pinning ceremony.

The pinning tradition goes back to the 1800s and it represents the nursing education journey.  The pin, which symbolizes the new nursing credentials, is presented by a faculty member selected by the student who has supported or mentored them throughout this journey.  As part of the ceremony, the graduates state the Florence Nightingale Pledge, the nursing equivalent of the physicians’ Hippocratic Oath: to do their best, never do harm, and always put the care of patients first.

The NJEA Convention was held on Thursday, November 10 & Friday, November 11 in Atlantic City, NJ. We hosted an Alumni Breakfast on Thursday, November 10 where alumni had the opportunity to meet and connect with campus leadership including our new Dean of the School of Education, Dr. Kelly McNeal. Georgian Court is so proud of our alumni and our educators and it was a wonderful opportunity to reminisce about their time at the court.

Dr. Bennett, our inaugural Mulcahy Institute Faculty Fellow, is co-editing a new book series for Brill, a major publisher headquartered in the Netherlands. The series, Studies in Peace History, promotes new scholarship on peace history and on the movements, groups, people, and actions that have opposed both war and its causes.

Dr. Bennett also launched the Mercy Peace Forum on Wednesday, November 9th.

“After being named the inaugural Mulcahy Institute Faculty Fellow, I thought about establishing a speaker series on nonviolent peace and justice,” Bennett said. “I discussed the idea with a colleague at Gwynedd Mercy University, and we then invited colleagues at the University of Saint Joseph and at the University of Detroit Mercy.”

“Besides teaching at Mercy universities,” Bennett noted, “we are all active in the Peace History Society which, along with our universities, is cosponsoring the Forum. We envision the Mercy Peace Forum as an opportunity to foster interaction among Mercy universities about nonviolent peace and justice.”
