Mary Arthur Beal, RSM, Ph.D., ’55, earned her first degree in biology at Georgian Court University.  In 1965 she returned to the Court to teach within the education department and in 1984 she was named the dean of the graduate school, ultimately serving the Georgian Court community for 34 years. Beloved educator and advisor, Sister Mary Arthur held her students to high standards and they, in turn, accepted her challenge, many maintaining their friendships with her long after graduating. In 2010, she celebrated 70 years as a Sister of Mercy, humbled to be able to do so and adding “I never wanted to be anything else but a Sister of Mercy.”

The Class of 1968 established a scholarship in honor of S. Mary Arthur Beal, with the inaugural recipient to be announced in the 2017-2018 academic year. It is with great honor that the class opens this scholarship to those wishing to celebrate S. Mary Arthur with a gift in her memory. Having reached endowment, any gifts made to this scholarship will continue to support Georgian Court students in perpetuity, providing an eternal remembrance of S. Mary Arthur, her enduring spirit, and what she meant to Georgian Court.
